“Christmas is over. It’s not here anymore.” Isaiah says out of the blue or in response to seeing something Christmassy missing from it’s spot or sitting in a box.
“Yep, it’s over. But we’ve got a big year ahead of us with lots to look forward too.” I respond. He nods, and goes back to enjoying whatever toy or goody he was playing with before.
Christmas came and went. We set up our tree on Thursday night after the girls went to bed. The next morning Isaiah got show his sisters the tree he helped set up and decorate. They were excited, responding with “oohs” and “wow” in a preview of the awe they would experience on Christmas. The tree itself took a minimal beating and only tipped over once. No ornaments lost their lives this year, so that’s a big win.
On Christmas Eve we went to Church at 4 pm then came home and had a big dinner. The kids each opened their one present that magically appeared under the tree while they were napping. It was pajamas. They loved them and went to bed almost on time. Jon and I stayed up late in a massive marathon of wrapping presents while watching “A Christmas Story” on TBS, which has become a treasured tradition.
Surprisingly, everyone slept through the night and woke up around 7:20, a little later than a normal day. It was nice and unexpected since Isaiah has been waking up at 4am and 5am quite frequently. Slowly we made our way through the giant pile of presents that took us the first half of the day to open. We snacked on leftovers and appetizers all day. They kids were a little under the weather and at around 3pm there was a major group meltdown. But by 5 everyone was back on track and things were normal again.
Our Christmas was perfect, and hopefully we will have many more just like this one.
Now it’s time to wrap up the year in a pretty bow and place it on a shelf. It’s been full and fun and overwhelming, but nothing we couldn’t ultimately handle. Just a few days left to tie up loose ends and start new.
Did you only have the tree up for a few days to prevent "casualties" or is that a standard length of time for your tree?
